The Israeli military says it has launched an operation in the occupied West Bank’s Jenin that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said aimed to “eradicate terrorism” in the area.

Israel has freed 90 Palestinian detainees in exchange for three Israeli hostages as the first stage of its ceasefire deal with Hamas.

A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip took effect on Sunday as Hamas released the first three female hostages it held for 15 months of the devastating war with Israel.

The 90 Palestinian prisoners that were in Israeli custody have been released, an Israeli prison service spokesperson said in a statement early Monday morning local time – about 80 minutes past the conclusion of Day 1 of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire and hostage exchange deal.

Under the Gaza ceasefire deal, Israel has agreed to release Palestinians held in Israeli jails in return for freeing hostages taken by the militant group Hamas in their Oct. 7, 2023 attack.
